Holliston Schools Adopt Limits on Immigration Arrests

Holliston's School Committee voted 6-0 to adopt a policy barring civil immigration arrests from school grounds without a judicial warrant. The policy, built on the state's PROTECT Act and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education guidance, also covers drop-off, pickup and school events. Members separately approved a four-month pilot of a biweekly "Round the Table" newsletter summarizing committee business, with the communications subcommittee previewing and voting on each edition before release.

The committee accepted a $3,000 piano gift from the high school's performing arts program and heard that chronic absenteeism has fallen from 16.7 percent in 2023 to 9.9 percent this year. Granite Street resident Margaret "Meg" Johnson told the board her children's bus stop remains unsafe despite years of requests, saying "the bus driver said it was out of his hands." Superintendent Carter also presented six evaluation goals, including a new strategic plan and a more ground-up budget process.
