Holliston Select Board unanimously backs U.S. Bike Route 1 for Upper Charles Rail Trail

Holliston Select Board votes to pursue U.S. Bike Route 1 designation for the Upper Charles Rail Trail. The board voted 3-0 on January 26 to authorize Town Manager Frank Gervasio to send a formal letter of support to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, a step that could place the existing East Coast Greenway corridor through Holliston on a federally recognized cycling network linking Bar Harbor, Maine to Key West, Florida.
Kerry Irons of the Adventure Cycling Association, which provides technical support to AASHTO on the route, told the board the designation carries "no cost, no requirements, no constraints" on the town. Rail Trail Committee Chair Robert Weidknect called it "a great opportunity to hopefully one day see organized groups go through our town." In other action, the board unanimously approved deficit spending authority for the fiscal year 2026 snow and ice removal budget, which Gervasio said would be exhausted after the January 26 storm; he noted the $250,000 budget would be replenished from free cash at the May 11 Town Meeting, where a preliminary departmental budget picture shows requests totaling $930,000 against an estimated $650,000 to $750,000 available for adjustments.
